This is just a heads up about the last book on my summer reading list. I love reading. I love paperbacks. I love turning pages, and page-turners! As with House of Cards (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Cards_(American_TV_series), reality is impossible to compete with. The Trump administrations have been more eye-catching and stunningly corrupt than the authors and screenwriters could possibly have anticipated in the TV series. Yet, some people still hang off every word that Trump says , at their peril and the peril of their country and the global economy (reminder of the liar-in-chief https://captimes.com/opinion/dave-zweifel/opinion-trumps-lie-meter-is-running-full-steam/article_0ff250d0-da75-11ef-8e62-e7ae386ec333.html)
What has captured my attention in Trump 2.0 is the intention to be spiteful, vindictive, cruel and despotic (yes, more so that the first iteration of the corrupt tendencies of the Trump presidencies. How do I try to make some sense of this, if that is even possible? Well, for me, I look for historians, philosophers, psychologists, sociologists, economists, doctors, lawyers, foreign policy experts and professionals of all stripes to add their considered knowledge and research to my own attempt to unwrap all that is wrong with this Trump 2.0.
I try to gather facts and evidence, not hearsay and opinion. So, what do we know so far?
Tens of Thousands of detainees are being held by ICE, which has a bigger budget than many departments in the US administration (https://www.newsnationnow.com/us-news/immigration/ice-holding-record-detainees-held/)
The corruption of Trump 2.0 continues at a torrid pace. Far worse is being done in far less time, with courts barely able to slow it all down for a sober second thought. Trump has chosen to operate by Executive order, bypassing the elected checks and balances of the congress and senate (not there were any checks and balances since Trump did and does whatever he is being directed to do (whether that is the tenets and proscriptions of the Project 2025 authors who are now IN the Trump administration (https://www.newsweek.com/project-2025-contributors-trump-administration-2040464) or by Russian pressure (https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025/06/25/the-idea-that-the-kremlin-has-kompromat-on-trump-seems-increasingly-plausible/)
Firing of all those in government departments who do not support Trump's policies or vision of America and replacing these people with loyalists, regardless of expertise or qualifications (https://apnews.com/article/trump-firings-prosecutors-dei-federal-government-2042969d1855feb2753b6237f1022666)
The far reaching impact of having BIG MONEY buy political influence (from elections to quid pro quo/pay to play) (https://information-warfare.com/the-rise-of-peter-thiels-empire-a25c40db6cfc) and (https://www.epi.org/blog/corruption-in-plain-sight-how-elon-musk-has-benefited-from-the-first-100-days-of-the-trump-administration/)
So, what book did I order to offer some historical context? https://www.amazon.ca/dp/0674976061?ref_=pe_125682630_1045605200_i_fed_asin_title
Here is a good review of the book and the interview by Law and History shows why this book caught my attention.
